Common questions
Our directory currently lists every licensed fertility clinic operating in Portugal, ranked by patient reviews, treatment range and CNPMA registration. The list is refreshed monthly so the count is always current.
We sort clinics by verified Google reviews, response time and procedure transparency. The top three for Portugal are highlighted at the top of the listing with the underlying review counts so you can judge the sample size yourself.
A subset of clinics in Portugal hold an SNS convention for IVF, ICSI and gamete donation. Filter the listing by "SNS" to see only those, with current waitlist guidance per clinic.
Out-of-pocket IVF in Portugal ranges roughly from €3,200 to €5,800 per cycle depending on protocol, medication and add-ons. Each clinic page shows the latest declared price band and what's included.
Yes — use the "Get 3 proposals" form. We forward your case to three pre-vetted clinics in Portugal and they reply within 24 working hours. There's no obligation and no fee.
Every clinic must hold a valid CNPMA licence, publish a price range and answer our editorial questionnaire. We re-verify each profile at least every six months and flag any clinic that stops responding.
We aggregate public Google reviews and add our own editorial notes after speaking to former patients. We never accept paid placements: clinic ranking is independent of advertising relationships.
Portugal has 30+ centres licensed by the CNPMA for medically assisted procreation, split between the public sector (SNS) and the private sector. CNPMA licensing is technique-specific: a centre may be authorised for IVF/ICSI but not for PGT or gamete donation. Before booking, confirm on the CNPMA portal that the centre is licensed for your specific technique.
Four criteria separate top clinics from the rest. **Multidisciplinary team**: a physician specialising in reproductive medicine with recognised additional training, a biologist, a senior embryologist, a clinical psychologist assigned to MAP, and a specialist MAP nurse. **Certified laboratory**: ideally ISO-certified, with time-lapse incubators, HEPA air filtration and electronic gamete-identification systems. **Outcome transparency**: clinical pregnancy rates per transfer stratified by age, published and updated annually. **Embryo transfer policy**: preference for elective single embryo transfer (eSET) in good-prognosis patients, aligned with ESHRE best practice.
Geography matters. Over 80% of centres cluster in Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, Aveiro and Braga, with additional presence in Faro, Évora, Funchal and Ponta Delgada. For patients outside these hubs, the monitoring phase of ovarian stimulation (scans and bloods every 2–3 days for 8–14 days) is the main logistical variable. Some clinics partner with imaging providers in smaller cities. Also consider travel time for the day of egg retrieval and embryo transfer — moments where you need to be calm and well-rested.
Price is not a proxy for quality. Cheaper centres can have laboratory excellence; expensive centres may charge for brand and premises without delivering better clinical results. What matters is the clinical pregnancy rate per transfer for your age group, as reported to the CNPMA. Ask for this number in writing before deciding, alongside an itemised quote covering: initial consultation, tests, estimated medication, expected cycles, add-ons, and annual cryopreservation fees.
We recommend requesting three quotes in parallel, from different centres (ideally one SNS centre when eligible and two private ones). Structured comparison removes commercial pressure and supports informed decisions. All information in this hub is editorially independent and cross-checked against official sources — CNPMA, Portuguese DGS, SNS, ERS and Law 32/2006. Best-practice recommendations follow European ESHRE and UK NICE NG156 guidance.
