Pillar fertility-treatment guides for Portugal: how to read them
Our pillar guides are intentionally long. Each guide covers, for a single treatment, what it is, who it is indicated for, what Law 32/2006 says, real success rates published by CNPMA, average price at Portuguese private centres, reimbursement on the NHS, medication co-payment, clinical risks (including OHSS and multiple pregnancy), treatment duration, week-by-week schedule, and how to choose a clinic. None of these pieces is optional for an informed decision.
Editorial process combines three sources: (1) recent reviews from ESHRE and NICE NG156; (2) CNPMA annual reports with real Portuguese rates; (3) direct verification of clinic price lists. Every guide is signed by a clinical reviewer listed in our editorial team and dated. When we publish corrections they are public on the corrections page.
Guides are organised by treatment and not by clinic by design. In Portugal, the Health Regulatory Authority (ERS) and the Medical Order discourage ranked clinic recommendations without transparent criteria — so we keep clinical guides (this hub) separate from the editorial clinic comparison. Use both: start with the treatment guide, then compare licensed clinics for that treatment.
Every guide links internally to related tools (cost calculator, success calculator, reimbursement calculator), to the glossary, to the FAQ, to the price hub and to clinics licensed for the treatment. A full read takes 12–20 minutes; we recommend reading before your first consultation to maximise time with the specialist.
If you are starting, follow this order: first the infertility diagnosis guide, then the guide for the treatment your doctor proposed. If you are torn between options, read the relevant guides and confront them on the comparator. All information in this hub is editorially independent and cross-checked against official sources — CNPMA, Portuguese DGS, SNS, ERS and Law 32/2006. Best-practice recommendations follow European ESHRE and UK NICE NG156 guidance.
Hub FAQs
- Can I trust the price ranges in the guides?
- Yes. Each range is validated yearly against published clinic price lists and against patient-reported figures. Individual quotes will vary — always request a written offer.
- Do guides replace a consultation?
- No. Guides are evidence-based editorial information. Clinical decisions require a personalised assessment by a reproductive-medicine specialist.
- How often are guides revised?
- At least yearly, plus whenever new ESHRE/NICE evidence or national regulatory changes appear.
- Why so many outbound citations?
- For verifiability. Every important clinical statement links to the primary source — guideline, study, law or regulator portal.
- Will you add more guides?
- Yes. Social fertility preservation, same-sex couple pathways, and advanced techniques (ROPA, PGT-M) are on the roadmap.
