Fertility treatment prices in Portugal vary significantly between private clinics, cities and techniques. An IVF cycle typically costs €3,500–€5,500, plus medication (€800–€2,500), possible add-ons (ICSI, PGT-A, assisted hatching) and embryo freezing. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is around €700–€1,200 per cycle. Egg donation is the most expensive treatment, usually €6,500–€9,500 per cycle.
In the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS), treatments are free or subsidised for eligible women up to 40, with a maximum of three IVF/ICSI cycles. Waiting times depend on the hospital. In the private sector, waiting times are short but costs are paid in full — some clinics offer payment plans and health insurance may cover part of the diagnostics and medication.

Medically assisted procreation prices in Portugal vary significantly across private clinics, techniques and cities. A private IVF cycle typically costs €3,500–€5,500; IVF with ICSI €4,000–€6,500; egg donation €6,500–€9,500; egg freezing €2,500–€4,500. Hormonal medication adds €800–€2,500 per cycle.
The base price rarely equals the total cost. Before signing consent, request a written, itemised quote including: initial consultation, complementary tests, expected medication, main technique, add-ons (ICSI, PGT-A, vitrification, assisted hatching), estimated number of cycles and annual cryopreservation fees. The gap between base price and realistic total can be 2×–3× — many couples underestimate this early on.
In the SNS, treatments are free for eligible patients: woman up to 40, GP referral, no common children, under Law 32/2006. Maximum reimbursed cycles: three for IVF/ICSI. Waiting times vary by region, between 8 and 24 months. ADSE (civil servants' scheme) reimburses part of the cost; some insurers (Tranquilidade, Médis, Multicare) sell fertility-specific products with 9–24-month waiting periods.
Hormonal medication deserves special attention. Even for privately treated patients, a medical prescription allows partial SNS reimbursement via community pharmacies — always ask whether the clinic provides a prescription for external use. The difference can be 30–50% of total medication cost. For long protocols (10–14 days), medication cost can reach €2,500; for mild stimulation it sits at €800–€1,200.
